Kamwenge District has tabled a draft budget of Shs42.4 billion for the Financial Year 2026/2027, prioritising key sectors including education, health, water and sanitation, roads and infrastructure, agriculture, and community development.
The draft estimates were presented before council by Fred Mbonigaba on behalf of the Vice Chairperson, who also serves as the Leader of Government Business in the district.
Speaking during the council session on Thursday, Mbonigaba revealed that the district expects the bulk of its funding to come from central government transfers amounting to Shs40.5 billion, with Shs1.5 billion projected from local revenue collections and Shs423 million anticipated from donors and development partners.
“We expect to receive Shs 40.5 billion from central government transfers, Shs 1.5 billion from local revenue, and about Shs 423 million from our development partners to support implementation of key district priorities,” he said.
He emphasised that the proposed budget will focus on strengthening service delivery across all sectors, boosting agricultural production, promoting value addition, and improving road infrastructure to enhance connectivity within the district.
“This budget is designed to improve the quality of services we deliver to our people, increase agricultural productivity and value addition, and upgrade our road network to support economic activities,” he added.
District Speaker Gerald Twebaze urged councillors to thoroughly scrutinise the draft and engage their constituents ahead of the next sitting where the budget is expected to be approved.
“I urge all councillors to critically review these estimates, consult your electorates on their priority needs, and return well-prepared for the next council session to ensure we pass a budget that reflects the aspirations of our people,” Twebaze said.
